Government and the law
Constitution, Parliament, courts, police, federal and state roles, citizenship duties.
Constitution and head of state
- The Constitution is the highest law of Australia.
- The King is head of state; the Governor-General represents the Crown in Australia.
Parliament and PM
- Parliament: the King (represented), Senate, and House of Representatives.
- The Prime Minister leads the government party or coalition in the House of Representatives.
Levels of government
- Federal government: defence, immigration, national matters.
- State governments: hospitals, schools, roads (varies).
- Local councils: rubbish, local roads, parks.
- Courts interpret law independently; police enforce the law.
Civic duties
- Citizens should vote, serve on a jury if called, and defend Australia if needed.
