  • Freedom of speech, religion, and association are fundamental — within the law.
  • Australia has a secular government: no official state religion.

Rule of law and equality

  • Everyone must obey the law — the rule of law applies to all.
  • Men and women have equal rights and opportunities.

Democracy and voting

  • Australia is a democracy: citizens elect representatives.
  • Voting in federal elections is compulsory for enrolled citizens 18 and over.
