Geography and capitals
- Canberra is the national capital.
- Australia has six states and two mainland territories (ACT and Northern Territory).
- Western Australia is the largest state by area.
Indigenous peoples
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are among the oldest continuous cultures in the world.
- Torres Strait Islanders are Indigenous peoples of the islands between Australia and Papua New Guinea.
Symbols and days
- Advance Australia Fair is the national anthem.
- Australia Day is 26 January; Anzac Day is 25 April; Remembrance Day is 11 November.
- The Aboriginal flag uses black, red, and yellow.
History and diversity
- European settlement began in 1788 with the First Fleet.
- The Commonwealth of Australia was formed in 1901.
- People from more than 200 countries have made Australia their home.
