Geography and capitals

  • Canberra is the national capital.
  • Australia has six states and two mainland territories (ACT and Northern Territory).
  • Western Australia is the largest state by area.

Indigenous peoples

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are among the oldest continuous cultures in the world.
  • Torres Strait Islanders are Indigenous peoples of the islands between Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Symbols and days

  • Advance Australia Fair is the national anthem.
  • Australia Day is 26 January; Anzac Day is 25 April; Remembrance Day is 11 November.
  • The Aboriginal flag uses black, red, and yellow.

History and diversity

  • European settlement began in 1788 with the First Fleet.
  • The Commonwealth of Australia was formed in 1901.
  • People from more than 200 countries have made Australia their home.
